Pro Capital Punishment Essay Example for Free

Genius Capital Punishment Essay As per my exploration there are a few people who accept capital punishment is correct in light of the fact that it is more secure to end one sentenced life than to chance the lives of other guiltless individuals. Capital punishment is most normally legitimate just for the most extraordinary cases, for example, planned homicide. Indeed, even in case of homicide, out of the 15,000 submitted every year, we are just currently arriving at the 1,000 execution mark following thirty years! This clearly shows the individuals who might be star the death penalty despite everything use it sparingly. Additionally backing up the conviction for utilizing the death penalty are various accounts of killers who, subsequent to being discharged from jail, basically slaughtered once more. One such record peruses, â€Å"In 1985, 13-year-old Karen Patterson was shot to death in her bed in North Charleston, S.C. Her executioner was a neighbor who had just served 10 years of a lifelong incarceration for killing his stepbrother Charles in 1970. The killer, Joe Atkins, cut the Pattersons telephone lines, at that point entered bearing a cleaver, a sawed-off shotgun, and a gun. Karens guardians were driven out of their home by Atkins. Karens mother rushed to the Atkins home close by, where Joe then killed his embraced father, Benjamin Atkins, 75, who had attempted to convince parole specialists to discharge Joe from the life sentence.† Other records show that a lifelong incarceration essentially isn't in every case enough to prevent an individual from rehashing their violations. â€Å"In 1965, Robert Massie killed mother of two Mildred Weiss in San Gabriel, Calif., during a follow-home burglary. Hours before execution, a stay was given so Massie could affirm against his assistant. Massies sentence was driven to life when the Supreme Court ended executions in 1972. Getting an undeserved additional opportunity, Massie was paroled, yet after eight months burglarized and killed businessperson Boris Naumoff in San Francisco.† From a strict point of view a religion that endorses the death penalty in specific situations is Islam. As per the Qu’ran in Al’ Ma’idah 5:33 â€Å"The discipline of the individuals who take up arms against Allah and His errand person and endeavor to make defilement (Fasad) in the land is just this, that they ought to be killed or executed or their hands and their feet ought to be cut off on inverse sides or they ought to be exiled from the land; this will be as a disfavor for them in this world, and in the great beyond they will have a shocking chastisement† This shows they have faith in capital punishment for the individuals who essentially purpose debasement or bring disrespect upon Islam, particularly if the culprit is a previous Muslim. The other defense for capital punishment, as indicated by Islam, is murder. On the off chance that anybody slaughters an individual except if it be for homicide or for spreading underhandedness in the land it would be as though he murdered all individuals. Furthermore, in the event that anybody spares an actual existence , it would be as though he spared the life surprisingly (Quran 5:32). This clearly expresses killers ought to experience a similar punishment as the wrongdoing they commited. My own convictions about the death penalty are decently in the center of the street. From one viewpoint I don't trust it is wicked for lawbreakers to be executed, as the Bible plainly embraced the thought in the Old Testament In Genesis 9:6 it says â€Å" Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man will his blood be shed: for in the picture of God made he man.† The New Testament obviously contains a greater amount of the â€Å"grace† approach and consequently I will in general lean more that way. Albeit even in the New Testament the Bible states in Romans 13: 4 â€Å" For he ( the police, judges, and so forth.) is the pastor of God to thee for good. Yet, in the event that thou do what is malevolent, be apprehensive; for he beareth not the blade futile, a revenger to execute anger upon him that doeth evil.† Clearly this embraces the death penalty for scoundrels. Then again, individuals in America are decided as liable by a gathering of individuals who put forth a valiant effort yet can barely be 100% certain on their decision. Human mistake may caus e and no uncertainty has made some honest individuals be sentenced to death while a portion of the liable wander aimlessly among us. That makes me uncomfortable, and is exceptionally upsetting. In any case, is that a real motivation to get rid of capital punishment? That is a hard inquiry to reply, however I accept the appropriate response is no. I accept there are sure situations where the death penalty is completely fundamental, yet I need to state that I would not have any desire to be the person who settles on that choice. How would you judge which life is more important than another? The other inquiry has to do with whether the death penalty is genuinely an obstacle to others from carrying out wrongdoings. There are solid contentions on the two sides of that question however it is difficult to judge when on account of the interests procedure and different deferrals and formality, just a little level of those condemned ever get put to death. I allude back to the way that just around 1000 individuals have been executed during the most recent 30 years when there have been almost a large portion of a million homi cides in America! So the contention that death penalty is certifiably not a hindrance to wrongdoing conveys no weight to me. Subsequently, it is as yet my own conviction that death penalty ought to be utilized, with prudence, after a reasonable preliminary, and in specific cases, however I additionally accept that once the choice has been made, it ought to be executed with a lot more prominent speed. Death row shouldn’t be a mile long. I accept that once the appointed authority has given the sentence, there ought to be an a lot quicker procedure to the day of execution. I abhor the idea of a guiltless individual being executed, yet far and away more terrible are the a huge number of casualties who are left without feeling that equity was accomplished for their friends and family and the millions who are in danger on account of the mercy of our equity framework. My accomplice and I got along very well. We had a simple time talking about our material and he was not hard to manage. He invested the energy given investigating, and stayed in contact with me to survey our introductions. At the point when w e met the following day, he was there at the time settled upon and +wasn’t brimming with objections, which I appreciate. Brandon is a decent accomplice and I would work with him once more.

Economic Globalization And Its Impact On The World

Economic globalization is one of the most powerful forces to have shaped the postwar world. (Frieden, Lake and Broz 63) Free trade is the hallmark of a globalized system; reduced costs in transport and the elimination of trade barriers have led to a surge of international trade between developed countries and lesser-developed countries. The benefits of free trade extend internationally. Free trade promotes economic development in lesser-developed countries and increases imports to developed nations. But does this system of global trade benefit only manufactures and businesses or does it open up the market to everyone by creating new global business opportunities for the developing world. Free trade occurs when there are no artificial blockades put in place by governments to restrict the flow of goods and services between trading countries. When trade barriers, such as tariffs and subsidies are put in place, they protect domestic producers from international competition and redirect, rather than create trade flows. (Edge, n.d.) The problem with trade barriers and protectionism in general are the fact that the current world monetary system encourages financial market integration. Italian Adverbs - Avverbi Italiani

Adverbs (avverbi) are used to modify or clarify the meaning of a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. The adverbs are italicized in the examples below. Ho riposato tranquillamente. - I slept peacefully.Quello scrittore à ¨ piuttosto famoso. - That writer is quite famous.Devi parlare molto lentamente. - You have to talk very slowly. Where do you place adverbs in Italian? With a verb  - When an adverb , it’s usually placed after the verb (italicized): Ho fatto tardi e la segreteria dellUniversità   era già   chiusa. - I was late and the Secretary’s office at the University was already closed. Depending on the context of the sentence, though, the adverb (italicized) can be placed elsewhere: Domani, se à ¨ una bella giornata, voglio andare nel bosco. - If it’s a nice day tomorrow, I want to go to the forest. With a compound tense - When the verb is a , many adverbs can also be placed between the auxiliary and the participle: Veramente non ho ben capito. - I really didn’t understand well. With an adjective - When an adverb refers to an adjective, the adverb comes before the adjective: Questo cane à ¨ molto buono. - This dog is really good. With another adverb - When an adverb refers to another adverb, those of the adverbs of quantity (avverbi di quantità  ), in this case â€Å"di solito - usually,† are placed ahead of the others: La mattina, di solito, mi alzo molto presto. - Usually in the morning, I get up really early. With a negation  - The adverb of negation (avverbio di negazione non) always comes before the verb: Vorrei che tu non dimenticassi mai quello che ti ho detto. - I hope you never forget what I told you. With a question - Interrogative adverbs (Avverbi interrogativi) introduce a direct interrogative sentence and are usually placed before the verb: Quanto costano queste banane? - How much do these bananas cost? What kinds of adverbs are there? Italian adverbs can be divided into four groups: semplici, composti, derivati, and locuzioni avverbiali: Simple adverbs (Avverbi semplici) are formed from a single word: Mai - Never, ever, even, possibly, reallyForse - Maybe, perhaps, probablyBene - Good, well, fineDove - Where, anywhere, someplacePià ¹ - More, several, extraQui - Here, there, where, over hereAssai - Very, much, extremely, quiteGià   - Already, enough, yet, previously Compound adverbs (avverbi composti) are formed by combining two or more different elements: Almeno (al meno) - At leastInvero (in vero) - Indeeddappertutto (da per tutto) - Everywherein fatti (in fatti) - In factperfino (per fino) - Even Locution adverbs (locuzioni avverbiali) are phrases arranged in a fixed order: Allimprovviso - SuddenlyDi frequente - OftenPer di qua - This wayPressappoco - RoughlyPoco fa - A bit agoA pià ¹ non posso - As much as possibleDora in poi - From now on These types of adverbs can often be replaced with an adverb: allimprovviso improvvisamente; di frequente frequentemente. Derivative adverbs (avverbi derivati) are formed from another word, to which a suffix is added, like -mente or -oni: allegro allegramente, ciondolare ciondoloni). Most adverbs are derived by adding the suffix -mente to the feminine form of the adjectives that end in -o: certa-mente, rara-mente, ultima-mente or to the singular form of those adjectives that end in -e: forte-mente, grande-mente, veloce-mente. But if the last syllable of these adjectives is -le or -re the final e is eliminated: general-mente, celer-mente. Special forms include: benevolmente (instead of benevola-mente)ridicolmente (instead of ridicola-mente)leggermente (instead of leggera-mente)violentemente (instead of violenta-mente)parimenti (instead of pari-mente)altrimenti (instead of altra-mente) The forms ridicolamente, parimente, altramente are rare or obsolete. Other categories of adverbs: avverbi di modo (adverbs of manner)(adverbs of place)avverbi di tempo (adverbs of time)avverbi di giudizio (adverbs of judgment)

Information And Handling Of Customer Conversations

In the emerging experience economy, the proper management and handling of customer conversations are suddenly one of the most important functions a company has. However, with limited scope for organic growth in the western countries such as the US and Europe, many companies and investors changed their eyes towards the emerging markets (Shaw, 2012). According to Euro monitor International Report, the top five fastest-growing major economies in 2015 will be all emerging market economies in the Asia Pacific region. This could be used to detect and investigate changes that occur infrequently such as changes to operating system files, scripts and executable services. As some computer system contain sensitive data, such as the client database and company portfolio, companies actually exercise control of the transfer of data from the system to removable storage devices such as flash drive and portable hard disk by coming up with a logging system. Another way is to do auditing on various areas and keeping records of them. Possible things that companies audit on their secure systems include the following: * Access to backup information and result s of backup and recovery tests. * Database transactions to detect unauthorized access and modification of data. * Data access and modification for all tables in a database. * Individual actions for all users who have privileged accounts, i.e. Access to confidential data or access the secure system server. * Physical access to the secure system server attempts.Show MoreRelatedThe Threat Of Insider Threats1917 Words   |  8 PagesThe threat of insider threats within our company is made possible by emerging technologies. Influence of Communication Apprehension †Free Samples to Students

Question: Discuss about the Influence of Communication Apprehension. Answer: Introduction: A self-reflection is an important tool for every individual as it helps them in gaining an insight about them, which could be in terms of their skills, their emotions, or any other parameter for which the reflection was undertaken. This self reflection is based on the analysis of my communication skills which would help me in clarifying about the different skills which I have and which I lack. These could be assertiveness perception, active listening or verbal communications. In order to evaluate this, I would use certain diagnostic tools which have been presented to us through the tutorials. By undergoing this reflection, I would be able to improve upon my communication skills and this would be done through chalking out an action plan after conducting the literature review. In order to analyse my communication skills in different situations, I have used five different diagnostic tools. The first tool which was used by me was Self-Perceived Communication Competence Scale and this depicts the manner in which the communication competence of the individuals is analysed by themselves, where they are faced with different communication circumstances and where they have a range of receivers (McCroskey McCroskey, 1998). The next tool which I used was Personal Report of Intercultural Communication Apprehension and this helps in calculating the feelings of a person towards the communication whereby the person is asked to analyse their diversified communication circumstances, along with the manner in which they would behave, when faced by one (Neuliep McCroskey, 1997). As a third diagnostic tool, I opted for Talkaholic Scale which helps in measuring the compulsive communications and helps in showing the competency of an individual on the basis of their nature of being a talkative one, or not (McCroskey Richmond, 1995). The next diagnostic tool being used for this self reflection was Nonverbal Immediacy Scale-Self Report which shows the immediacy of the individual with regards to their communication and shows the positivity of a person where they engage in non-verbal immediate behaviour with others (Richmond, McCroskey Johnson, 2003). The last tool used was the "Willingness to Listen which shows the orientation of a person towards listening, which is another important element when it comes to communication skills of a person (Richmond Hickson, 2001). After undergoing all the requirements of these five diagnostic tools, I was successfully able to analyse my communication style, along with my preferences which were highlighted from these. The first tool, i.e., Self-Perceived Communication Competence Scale (SPCC) highlighted that I comfortable with friends and even with acquaintances but I do have a problem while communicating in the meetings. However, it also shows that even though I do not excel in public, but I am also not on the lower end of it. The second diagnostic tool which I used was Personal Report of Intercultural Communication Apprehension (PRICA) which highlighted that I have low intercultural communication apprehensions, which shows that I am very comfortable in dealing with the people from different cultural or ethnic backgrounds. The third diagnostic tool, i.e., Talkaholic Scale depicted that I am not a talkaholic or a talkative person. This shows that I do not face a difficulty in keeping quite where I should and so , I am not a compulsive communicator. In the fourth diagnostic tool, i.e., in Nonverbal Immediacy Scale-Self Report (NIS-S), it was highlighted that I use a lot of nonverbal cues and shows that I am positive towards the other people. This shows that I can easily communicate in a non verbal manner with others, which is a difficulty I face when it comes to verbal communications, as highlighted through the first diagnostic tool. The final diagnostic tool, i.e., Willingness to Listen Diagnostic highlighted to me that I have a high willingness to listen to others as I attained a score of over 80. Based on my personal analysis, it becomes clear that I lack the confidence which is required for public speaking and that I overuse the nonverbal cues which can make the other people very awkward around me, particularly when they are not comfortable with such verbal cues. Even though my public speak anxiety lies in the middle range, but it does highlight that when it comes to public speaking, I become very anxious and prefer to even avoid it. This would become particularly problematic where my work requires me to talk to different people and give presentations. Also, an overuse of verbal cues can be taken as annoyance or could end up offending a person with smaller social boundaries and so, I need to learn to control my actions and also avoid overusing them. The reasons why I identified these two communication key issues can be further strengthened by the recent incidents which I had to bear. I am good at giving movie reviews to my friends and one of my friends asked me to give a movie review to his group of friends, as he was given this as an activity from his college. I had prepared a very good presentation and even the answers to the possible questions which can be raised by my friends group. But when I went to this group of strangers, I started mumbling and mixing up words. To make the matters worse, when the questions for which I was prepared to give the perfect answers were thrown at me, I could not even read those in front of this group, from my cue cards. My hands got shaky and cold and I just delivered my presentation somehow. Even my friend was shocked at this. And this shows that I need to work up on my public skills to avoid such situation from happening again. The other problem with my overuse of verbal skills was highlighte d to at a funeral where I was with my family members and close relatives. One of my cousins told me to control my hand gestures as I was being over the top with them, particularly given the situation and the sad environment. This not only made me conscious but also conformed with the diagnostic tool above, which shows that I use the non verbal cues quite often. Public speaking is a very common issue which is faced by not only students but also by the general population. As per North and Rivers (2001) the individuals, when are faced with the public speaking anxiety, more than often face a number of symptoms when dealt with a public speaking situation and this includes discomfort, confusion, sweating, palpitations, muscle tension and even gastrointestinal discomfort. Byrnely, Cross Spanos (1993) had highlighted that around eight five percent of the general population reported some or other level of anxiety when it came to public speaking. In this regard, Rossi and Seiler (1986) shed the light that stage fright and public speaking was something which was being studies and investigated since the middle of 1930s. Public speaking is often linked to the anxiety which one faces, and which denotes the state of apprehension and uneasiness, or a fear which results from the anticipation of something which is deemed as threatening. Scovel (1991) highli ghted that when the anxiety was facilitated, it results in positive effect over the performance of the learners and where the anxiety is too much, it results in poor performance. Speaking is deemed as a difficult task which leads to anxiety as per Horwitz, Horwitz and Cope (1991) and this is particularly true for the students when they have to speak in class for the anxious students. Such students face difficulty in making a differentiation between the structures and sounds and even in apprehending the meaning of simple words. There have been numerous literatures where it has been identified that there is an emotional predisposition towards public speaking as a reason for anxiety (Beatty, 1988; Beatty, Balfantz Kuwabara, 1989). Dunbar, Brooks and Miller (2006) highlighted that communication skills were a necessary part of the students to be successful in not only their college life but also at their work places. Woodrow (2006) identified two kinds of anxiety reactions, the first one was the psychological reasons and the second one was cognitive reaction. In the first kind, the body reacts, for instance, high heart rate, stammering or fidgeting. And in the se cond one, the brain reactions are increased, for instance, thinking irrelevant thoughts or such thoughts which are self-depreciating. The thoughts of an anxious person, shows negative thoughts, which leads to the person having a high level of anxiety. Jones (2004) highlighted that there was a need to facilitate this anxiety by helping the anxious person in learning the manner in which that particular hurdle could be overcome. So, once the job gets done, he identified, that the anxiety ended. Where the person is able to push them, for doing the task which they are anxious about, it could result in helping them in tackling their anxiety. Ohata (2005) identified that these facilitating effects would motivate the learners and would depend upon their perceptions and attitudes. Ohata also identified communication apprehension as a form of anxiety where the speaker forms a negative self perception which leads to their anxious behaviour. Woodrow (2006) based her study on inferring the anxiety in the oral communications. She identified that people would get butterflies in their stomach before speaking in public, or before giving a formal presentation and thus, there was a need to learn the manner in which the audience can be addressed with out fearing for something which might never happen, and even if it happens, would not have a devastating impact, as is being feared upon by the speaker. Marinho, Medeiros, Gama and Teixeira (2017) highlighted through their research that public speaking competence was a must for the business life and that this was a major element for the professional life of an individual to be successful, as fluent communication skills helps in establishing creditability. Similar results were attained in the research of Russ (2012) where they stated that with good communication skills, the interpersonal workplace relationships were enhanced with the staff, which included the key managerial personnel. Hence, the literature associated with public speaking clearly shows the need for harnessing this skill, if a person wants to succeed in their college life, and even in their future business life. Pease and Pease (2004) stated that the majority of researches agreed on the fact that the words are only used to convey the information and for negotiations, the body language is used. The non verbal communication shows what goes on in ones mind. So, a movement of hand shows the real feelings of an individual. For instance, if a person taps his table on the table, it shows that the person is waiting for something. Gamble and Gamble (2013) viewed that nonverbal communications were the actions done by human, which includes their appearances, space, smell, time, sound and even the use of objects. These can also be used to clarify the words or to make them change their meaning, for instance by winking at the end of a sentence. Butland (2012) identified the nonverbal communications as being complex, with different meanings. So one person could perceive a certain thing from an action, and the other one can perceive something else. Navarro and Kartins (2009) highlighted that at times the people are not even aware that they are communicating in a nonverbal manner and is done unconsciously. Gamble and Gamble (2013) also stated that these are even used to show displeasure when the deep emotions are not expressed through words. A slumped over posture and a scowl on your face can suggest that you are unhappy wile your clinched fist and tense muscles can communicate just how unhappy you might be. And so, in order to save from another person judging the first one, there is a need for the first person to learn and control the nonverbal communications, as there can be situation where the person speaks something but their gestures portrays something else, thus creating a conflict in the other persons mind, and resultin g in an un-surety and a lack of confidence towards the first person. Once these two communications had been prepared, I had to develop an action plan for the next six months, so that I could take the requisite steps towards overcoming the issues highlighted above. The first one in this regard is that I need to maintain a personal journal where I would track down whatever I did each day for the next six months. This would help me throwing a light on how I behaved and the progress I made after taking steps towards improving upon my public skills and the misuse of nonverbal skills. This journal would also help in pinpointing the issues which I am still facing and the things which I need to work upon for the future, particularly in my work life. I would also take up regular interaction with strangers and each week, I would try to interact with a minimum of one stranger and talk to them for five minutes. This would help me in getting over my communication apprehensions. I am also going to ask a person for being my mentor, so that they can oversee my progre ss on monthly basis. In this regard, I would ask (insert subject teacher name) to be my mentor for the next six months as (he) teaches communication skills and can best help me in this matter. I would also undertake a habit of writing a memo every week for the first two months, based on a book I read related to improving my shortfalls. In the last two months, I would communicate with my mentor to give a chance to speak before a crowd in the university itself, on weekly basis so that I could address my fears. Also, I would be attending the cultural fest being organized by my relative next month, where I would get a chance to interact with a number of people and would try to control my nonverbal communications on one hand, and would be working on improving upon my verbal communications without being anxious. The success of this would be measured by my friend (insert name of friend) and my (father/ mother) who would analyse my communications and give me feedback on whether there has been an improvement from the present day. These activities have been effectively chalked out through the use of Gantt chart, covering the action plan which I would follow for the next six months. Gantt Chart depicting Action Plan Nov-17 Dec-17 Jan-18 Feb-18 Mar-18 Apr-17 Journal Memo Mentor Presenting before crowd Cultural Fest Weekly interaction with strangers The best manner of evaluating my overall progress, after the completion of six months, I would ask my fellow classmates to give me feedback, along with the other subject teachers and the guidance counsellors as they are in the best situation to give me the feedback. Apart from this feedback, I would also request them to give me the suggestions and the shortfalls which they think are still present, and which I may have failed in analysing here, so that I could improve upon these, not just to have a better corporate future, but also to have a personal growth. Opinion. a. commonality of single parenthood b. closing statement I am not a psychologist or a sociologist. I am a single father in aggressive pursuit of a doctorate in parenting which has so far consumed five years and four months of my life. Nothing Ive ever done has given me more joys and rewards than being a single parent to my daughter. T he perfect scenario: two people meet, fall in love, have a lovely wedding, a romantic honeymoon, successful careers, a house mortgage, 2. 3 darling children, and live happily ever after. Thats the way its supposed to happen, right? At least for the Jones family it does. Few situations have ever been more idyllic and unfortunately, reality doesnt always deal from the same deck of cards and it most often doesnt turn out that way. W hat happens next? Divorces happens next; a very common aspect of todays society. For foundation purposes, lets look at a few statistics: The percentage of households consisting of married couples fell from 79 percent in 1950 to 55 percent in 1991. Non-family householdsmostly people who live alonegrew from 10 percent to 30 percent of households during the same period. Between 1956 and 1990, the median age at first marriage rose from 20.1 to 24 for women and from 22.5 to 26 for men. Since 1950, the percentage of American families headed by women has nearly doubled, to 17 percent. Thirty-one percent of one parent families are now headed by never-married women, in contrast to 6.5 percent in 1970 (Parkman, pp. 29-33). H ow can this be? Perhaps the shift to no-fault divorce is a major reason family life has become less attractive to many Americans. Under the no-fault divorce laws of most states, one spouse may unilaterally dissolve a marriage. These laws have reduced the incentives for spouses to commit themselves to their relationship and have caused many other people to either delay or forgo marriage (Parkman, pp. 29-33). Furthermore, no-fault divorces, ushered in 20 years ago was hailed as a quick and easy solution to relationships gone sour (Moody, pp. 70-78). Then there are the children between the two separating parents. W hile data strongly supports the idea that a two-parent family works out better than a one-parent situation, this has been seemingly over-looked as the decision to separate is eminently alluring. Single parenthood in the United States has exploded in the last decade. Over 14 million children (1/4 of total) under the age of eighteen live with only one parent and predictions estimate that by the year 2000, over one-half of all family units will be headed by a single parent (Krueger, pp. 13). .u9600a6a4479a0227f1ccd71c4f01f367 , .u9600a6a4479a0227f1ccd71c4f01f367 .postImageUrl , .u9600a6a4479a0227f1ccd71c4f01f367 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u9600a6a4479a0227f1ccd71c4f01f367 , .u9600a6a4479a0227f1ccd71c4f01f367:hover , .u9600a6a4479a0227f1ccd71c4f01f367:visited , .u9600a6a4479a0227f1ccd71c4f01f367:active { border:0!important; } .u9600a6a4479a0227f1ccd71c4f01f367 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u9600a6a4479a0227f1ccd71c4f01f367 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u9600a6a4479a0227f1ccd71c4f01f367:active , .u9600a6a4479a0227f1ccd71c4f01f367:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u9600a6a4479a0227f1ccd71c4f01f367 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u9600a6a4479a0227f1ccd71c4f01f367 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u9600a6a4479a0227f1ccd71c4f01f367 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u9600a6a4479a0227f1ccd71c4f01f367 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u9600a6a4479a0227f1ccd71c4f01f367:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u9600a6a4479a0227f1ccd71c4f01f367 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u9600a6a4479a0227f1ccd71c4f01f367 .u9600a6a4479a0227f1ccd71c4f01f367-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u9600a6a4479a0227f1ccd71c4f01f367:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Cultural Anthropology Essay In addition, only 68 percent live with their biological parents; and yet furthermore, approximately 40 percent of white and 85 percent of black children will live in a single-parent household within their childhoods (Thio, pp. 328). Hot Fuss by The Killers free essay sample

Every great album has its own unique elements that separate it from all the others. In this case, Hot Fuss molded the path to a 4 1/2-star rating on iTunes through a murder trilogy, a song about wanting to do something unforgettable, and several tracks about love with aspects to them that you wont find anywhere else. Formed in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2001 by Brandon Flowers (the lead vocalist), The Killers made their ultimate breakthrough with Hot Fuss, their debut album, in 2004. Songs like Mr. Brightside, Smile Like You Mean It, Somebody Told Me, and All These Things That Ive Done gave the album a catchy feel and all ranked in the Top 10 in both the UK and US. So, did the other songs deserve the same attention? Jenny Was a Friend of Mine | The Killers made their murder trilogy tricky, but understandable to those with open ears. The first track is actually the last part of the triumvirate, the first part being Leave The Bourbon on the Shelf (part of their third album, Sawdust) and the second part being one of the later songs in Hot Fuss, Midnight Show. We will write a custom essay sample on Hot Fuss by The Killers or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Jenny Was a Friend of Mine has one of the more literal set of lyrics, discussing how the narrator kills his friend (Jenny) and is going in for frequent questioning. The classic rock vibe mashes excellently with the panicked tone of Flowerss voice, which leads to more signs pointing in the direction of the narrator being guilty. As it is known in The Killers songs, the lyrics in the second verse can unexpectedly alter thus, making the song all the more fascinating. The backstory is revealed in the first two parts, but Jenny Was a Friend of Mine ties up as many loose ends as it can whilst still leaving the outcome vague and pleasantly mysterious. 2. Mr. Brightside | The logical question here would be, Who doesnt know this song? Upon listening to this song on the radio, I instantly fell in love and wanted to look into the band. A week later, I bought the whole album. Nine years after the album was released, and the local radio station is still playing this song? Yes, this song did deserve all the attention it got. The chorus encompasses the overall meaning of the song the narrator finds out his girlfriend is cheating on him (Shes touching his chest, now/he takes off her dress, now), or at least a friend that is with another guy. But, in this case, he doesnt murder her. While the song holds just as much significance as the others, its clear that its known more for its popular lyrics than its simplistic meaning. The perfect use of synthesizers combined with the stuck-in-your-head tune made this the catchiest song on the album for many fans, and rightfully so. 3. Smile Like You Mean It | The intended meaning of this track seals the deal as one of my favorite songs on Hot Fuss. For those wanting to listen to a reflective song about childhood and fast-forwarding into the future, but not having that too-frequently-used, depressing ambience of looking back at the past, Smile Like You Mean It is the perfect fit. Its not even the least bit surprising that this made the top charts in two countries. As Billboard stated, the song seems to deal with coming to terms with growing up and getting older. Each verse, backed by the impressive guitar chords, consists of memories that the narrator had through childhood and adolescence, and the thought-provoking fact about how its vital to think through your decisions and make the best choices you can before its too late. It doesnt sugarcoat reality, but it Smile Like You Mean It still provides the most optimistic outlook on life while simultaneously being realistic. 4. Somebody Told Me | Even though the song has been praised to and fro by critics across the globe, even the biggest fan of The Killers has to admit that its main line is odd. Somebody told me that you had a boyfriend/who looked like a girlfriend that I had in February of last year. For several days of listening to this particular song over and over again, I wondered if it was as unusual as it seemed, so I contemplated alternate meanings that I may have been missing. It turns out, however, that I was over-thinking it. Brandon Flowers is as literal as can be when he talks about an ex-girlfriend that possibly swapped genders. The verses build up to an even bigger picture that ends up being a guy (the narrator) chasing a girl that wont pay any attention to him, and then finding out that little secret. Its obvious that Flowers pours emotion into all his songs, but in Somebody Told Me, it pertains to the order of lyrics, which makes the storyline all the more realistic. In the opening ve rse, Breaking my back just to know your name/seventeen tracks and Ive had it with this game, you can clearly tell, just by the tone of his voice, that the narrator is sick and tired of chasing this girl that seems to not want to be found. Then, in the chorus, he becomes frantic because he wants to know the truth behind the rumor. Not to mention the exceptional use of the synthesizers and guitar, of course. This song is a rock masterpiece, and I applaud The Killers for this stunning track. 5. All These Things That Ive Done | If I had absolutely had to pick one favorite, this would be it. Now, if a song is over five minutes, some of them have a tendency to just be too long. Nobody wants to have that song that theyre inclined to skip over because of the extreme and unnecessarily longevity of it. And then there are those that are very catchy, use every minute to its advantage, and is still loved by thousands of people. All These Things That Ive Done executes that perfectly. Though the meaning is momentous, its also quite basic and very relatable. There are many people who want to do something memorable this songs example is being a soldier, but you can interpret that any way you choose: a soldier could be someone who does something memorable, or it could only be someone in the army. (Yes, theres a difference.) My favorite line, Ive got soul, but Im not a soldier, is the line I would use to represent this song. The narrator feels like he and many others have the potentia l to do something big, but just dont know how to get there, and Im sure weve all felt that way to some extent. Listening to this song sends chills through my spine and Im certain its done the same to others. 6. Andy, Youre a Star | It may surprise some of you, but not all songs with names in the title necessarily mean theyre about love. Brandon Flowers confirmed that the sixth track on Hot Fuss is not about him complimenting a girl, but reassuring a boy. The meaning of this song is so valuable, and provides so much insight into the hellhole that high school can be and one example of that. Andy is one of the top athletes of his school, and has noteworthy skills; but his 10 minutes of fame takes a turn for the worse, because that 10 minutes couldve transformed into something so much bigger. Andy sacrifices this by doing drugs, wasting his time by having sexual interactions with a girl (In a car with a girl/promise me shes not your world), and not concentrating on things of vitality. The people that are glorified for their athletic abilities take that recognition for granted, and the narrator wants Andy to know that he could make it big if he halted these dumb and costly actions. The song is short, simple but I believe that its inspirational. Its not degrading those who are popular, but lifting up the ones who deserve it. The bold bass chords blend remarkably with Flowerss serious tone, making it another favorite of mine on the album. 7. On Top | The interpretations for this particular song have varied, but from what Ive concluded (after a bit of research, I might add), this song is about a mans sexual intercourse with a girl. The first line, Remember Rio, and get down obviously has to do with the hotel/casino in Las Vegas (where the band formed). The narrator has been waiting all night to find a girl he wants to have sex with, and then finds that one girl who seems to be shy and hesitant. From that point on, people seem to interpret the song differently, but I acquired some information about Rio and found out that it has roof access. The title of the song seems to refer to the narrator and the girl he had sexual interactions with going on top of the building. It could be a stretch, but its a theory in progress. Even though On Top isnt one of my favorites of the album, it is, nevertheless, very catchy, and its a nice refresher from the common songs that, unlike this one, dont get down to the nitty-gritty. 8. Change Your Mind | This is definitely one of the more basic songs on the album, but it doesnt lack the the classic rock semblance that all the other songs carry. Sure, its a little slow and not nearly as energetic as, say, Midnight Show, but adding this one track even made it more apparent that the songs dont blend together at all. The lyrics are practically transparent: the narrator is telling how he was in love with a girl, how they tried to make their relationship work, and how it failed. Now, hes burdened by these constant feelings that sneak up on him about how he still feels something for the girl. The result isnt insinuated; the song just discusses the problem itself, which I love. Many beautiful songs tell a thorough story, but this one sticks solely to the predicament, which is uncomplicated yet soothing to listen to. 9. Believe Me Natalie | After talking to many people who have a mutual interest in The Killers (and, more specifically, Hot Fuss), about half those people talked nonstop about Believe Me Natalie. Several of them said that not only was this track their favorite of the album, but their favorite song of all time, which was incentive enough for me to go listen to it. Although I couldnt say that its my favorite of the album, you cant fully understand Hot Fuss without listening to Believe Me Natalie. Its beautiful in its entirety; it consists of The Killers signature rock theme, but has a complex, underlying meaning of the song that leaves fans puzzled at the first listen. Despite the fact that what the narrator is trying to convey seems quite obvious, you end up second-guessing yourself. The compilation of lyrics doesnt just talk about Natalies bucket list or that she should literally dance to disco. Just like in On Top, interpretations start to differentiate from here, so take it as you will: it could be about love, about a girl not daring enough to do the things shed always wanted to do, etc. Its undeniable, though, that Hot Fuss wouldnt be the same without this in-depth and solemn yet gracious song. 10. Midnight Show | The second part of the murder trilogy is my favorite for numerous reasons. The music alone is unpredictable and powerful, but when accompanied by the lyrics, it unites several of the missing pieces of the murder trilogy and then, followed by Jenny Was a Friend of Mine, which completes the sequence. Midnight Show trails the physical events of the murder itself (She turned her face to speak/but no one her cry), but avoids the gruesome details by the flawless use of metaphors. As screwed-up as this trilogy may be to some, Flowers went down a new road that I havent seen before and took his chances. This trilogy is a legitimate example of how, as an artist, you have to learn how to take risks. Taking on a task like this was bold and showed their matur ity, which I loved. Midnight Show is an exciting, thrilling track that provides a one-sided but riveting experience that will change your perspective of The Killers. 11. Everything Will Be Alright This last song formally completes the album with no disappointment. Even as the slowest and longest song on the album (almost 6 minutes long), it doesnt cease to impress. Barely anything is used literally, but thats the beauty of it: uncovering what the song truly means. After some thought and consideration (and research, of course), I finally understood: the narrator has been searching for the one, and when hes given up hope, he meets this girl who seems perfect. The catch? Shes already in a relationship. At least, thats what I got out of it and even though its cliche, I certainly dont expect every song to be out-of-the-box thinking. The Killers make up for that by the alluring use of the synthesizers, and that beat we know all too well that lies within every song of theirs. It may not be the most enthralling track on the album, but it closes the album with a replenished and finished feeling.
